Basically, knowledge objectives refer to the key ideas of the learning organization. As such, its use and application is no longer limited to business organizations but extends to other learning organizations such as schools and professional education. Its development have also been utilized in creating modern knowledge technologies such as knowledge bases and expert systems, help desks, corporate websites and intranets. Defining knowledge objectives is an important factor in the creation, organization, transfer and management of the inside information of an organization. Knowledge objectives are very important in a knowledge management system and ultimately in a knowledge-based economy where management focuses on improving business performance by strengthening the interconnections between people, processes and technology. By presenting simple and easily understandable ideas, concepts and goals, the knowledge relevant to an organization can easily be identified, renewed and shared by the people involved. Knowledge objectives encapsulate the ideas, concepts and conclusions that are to be used, discussed and learned by the people involved in a knowledge organization. In a corporate system where knowledge is the new capital, the sharing and inculcation of the appropriate knowledge objectives are very important in sharing intelligence, developing performance strategies and output, building up competitive advantage and bringing the community into higher levels of technical or human resource innovation. Knowledge objectives are oftentimes stated in single clear statements or one-word concepts that guide the way knowledge systems are managed. They considered as a key part of the different knowledge building or knowledge transfer activities in the organizations such as on-the-job training and formal apprenticeship, peer discussions, corporate libraries and other mentoring and training programs. These objectives are also important in developing knowledge management software that may be used to enhance the knowledge connectivity within an organization. By properly identifying and defining the knowledge objectives of a business organization, its intellectual capital is maximized, resulting in the improvement of the ability and aptitude knowledge worker as well as the direction of the company is indicated, enhancing the planning and mapping capability on the future goals of the organization. The effectiveness and efficiency of knowledge management systems depend greatly on how such knowledge objectives are identified and retained by the employees and how they are applied in practice. Identifying knowledge objectives is the first step in developing knowledge management systems. By stating key ideas as knowledge objectives, it becomes easier for the organization to translate these ideas into actual business practice or strategy or to codify them digitally. These objectives are also used to improve existing knowledge and to develop new ideas. For example, individuals working on a knowledge-based program for a business organization need to identify first the key ideas involved in the said program and to research on further information about these ideas and then create activities or management strategies that would help the effective formal application of these ideas. The ideas are then shared to the other individuals who are part of the business organization through learning activities or learning tools such as knowledge sharing systems or simply through printed publications. |
